ECNL & World Football Academy Hold First Special Topic Periodisation Seminar
RICHMOND, Va. (February 9, 2015) – The first collaborative seminar between the Elite Clubs National League and the World Football Academy (WFA) on periodisation in soccer was held on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at Rutgers University. The seminar was a one-day event open to coaches and staff from ECNL member clubs, and sold out within days.
Raymond Verheijen, founder of the World Football Academy, is a world-renowned football expert with a masters in Exercise Physiology and Sport Psychology. He has worked with multiple club and national teams, including FC Barcelona, Manchester City, Chelsea, Zenit St. Petersburg and Feyenoord as well as Holland (Euro 2000, 2004), South Korea (World Cup 2002, 2006 and 2010), Russia (Euro 2008 and 2012), Argentina (World Cup Final 2014) and many more.
The February seminar covered philosophical and practical principles in periodisation for elite soccer development, and related topics. The one-day seminar is the first step in towards seminars in advanced periodisation concepts and implementation, and was given strong reviews by attending coaches.
“The presentation on periodization by Raymond Verheijen was insightful and provocative. The small group setting allowed for lots of questions and interaction. Raymond forces you to think hard about how you coach.”
Mick D’Arcy – ECNL Director, FSA FC
“The ECNL is a great platform for the top female youth players in the country, where they are challenged day in and day out to be the best … we as coaches have the same responsibility … This seminar was an excellent opportunity to ensure we are constantly raising the bar for our players and ourselves.”
Meghan Ryan – Staff Coach, PDA
“The ECNL / WFA seminar was unique and at a very high level. Raymond’s knowledge of the game and the way he delivered his messages was impressive. His simplified and objective philosophy of teaching the game was eye opening and inspiring at the same time!”
Tino Mueller – ECNL Director, Penn Fusion
The February seminar is the first seminar delivered by World Football Academy in conjunction with the ECNL. Verheijen was excited about the impact of the partnership. “It was great to see so many coaches hungry to raise their bar, this partnership between ECNL and WFA is set to make a significant contribution to the development of the players in the league, and this group of coaches has the potential to set the standards for others to follow.”
The WFA periodisation courses are a part of the expanded coaching development platform within the ECNL. ECNL Coaching Development Platform began in 2011 with the ECNL Coaching Development Initiative (CDI) partnership with US Soccer’s Coaching Education Department. ECNL CDIs are held multiple times per year featuring presentations from coaching education leaders and youth national team coaches from US Soccer.
